Blog Entry 2: The Truth About Heaven

"The Truth About Heaven", is a song written by Ben Jorgensen, the lead vocalist and guitarist of the New Jersey band Armor for Sleep. Jorgensen born on July 4, 1983, wrote the first songs Armor for Sleep on his summer off college which soon led to a 8 year career with the band. In 2005 Armor for Sleep released the album, “What to Do When You Are Dead”, which tells the story of a male character who commits suicide due to relationship problems and his life after death. The reason I chose the song “The Truth About Heaven” is for the song's dark alluring imagery and thought, of missing someone after death. “The Truth About Heaven” proceeds the first song where the character kills himself, and tells of his afterlife experience stalking his girlfriend and regretting his mistake. The song begins with the lines “Walk past my grave in the dark tonight, Saw the stone and the note you left for me, to answer your question I just had to leave, I just had to leave” which seems to be the character's feeling of righteousness on his suicide. This stanza is followed by the chorus which describes the character's feeling of sadness for what he has done. He proceeds to say “I came down here to tell you it rains in heaven all day long, I wanna find you so bad and let you know I'm miserable up here without you, miserable up here without you” showing a ironic like factor where the person dead is the one missing the living. The song soon then ends with the line “Don't believe that the weather is perfect the day that you die” which is the protagonist telling his girlfriend in poetic terms that even when we die everything in our lives may not be perfect.
